It has always been my upper satisfaction to actually see a picture from how 't Brugs Beertje looked alike before it was a beer pub.
Yes, it was a grocery.
And here we do have that magic shot !! I'm so impressed.
You see, there was café 't Kemeltje next door on the left side.
And the neighbour on the right side was also a pub, café Hertsberghe from Bertha Verhegghe, and there even was another pub next to Hertsberghe with the name "In De City".

Café In De City, next door to Café Hertsberghe.

Different angle. When going to the left, you arrive at the grocery.

I also notice that the little statue of the little Bruges' bear was already there !

Note that opposite street there was also one cafe that period.
Cafe Vasche at Kemelstraat 6, run by Mr and Mrs Van Colle-Vandeneede.

And in the '40's we had Café 't Vosken at Kemelstraat 8, run by a certain Fientje. This is where The Hobbit tavern is located these days.

Wowser Filip, like yourself I've always wanted to see what Beertje looked like before it became that most iconic Belgian bar.

Structurally it looks exactly the same (minus the signs and logo) but the facade remains identical.

An amazing piece of history that I'm sure Dries (and Daisy) would be thrilled to see.

Simply wonderful

Hi Jay,
I put old and new side-by-side. There is about 70 years between both pictures !!! Amazing !!
And with a bit of AI I could colorize things too.
Simply ASTOUNDING !!!
Now, I was wondering what is laying behind the shop windows ?? I just can't figure it out, but it sure won't be any beer related.

Cheers,
Filip

Wonderful discovery Filip! I love seeing these old photos from days gone by. They give a new perspective on places that we know now but have an interesting past and many stories to tell. Thank you so much for sharing this Filip   t_u
