Imperial Pastry Porter!
« on: September 06, 2021, 10:40:51 AM »
Hi,
It seems the summer has arrived here in Belgium. Finally.... warm and sunny weather.
It's always a true pleasure to cross the border with the Netherlands, and head to "Zeeland".
The charming village of Groede is always on our menu.
Also, because there is a brewery in the centre of this small village, next to the church. Brewery Marckensteijn (http://www.marckensteijn.com/)
Around the corner, a brew firm with the name "Dutch Bargain" is housed, and they make some amazing quality beers at Marckensteijn. (https://www.dutchbargain.com/)
Time for a seat at the outside patio from Eat cafe De Drie Koningen, where the brewery actually is housed (https://www.dedriekoningen.com/)
Actually, the brewery is also named "Bierbrouwerij De Drie Koningen", their ever first name btw.

I ordered a Bon Apétit, Amélie at 11 vol%

Translated copy/paste from their website:

"Bon Appetit, Amelie - Coconut Pandan Cake
We liked the Bon Apetit, Amelie with crème brûlée so much last year, that we are making a series of it. This time we found inspiration in an Indonesian dessert, the sticky and sweet coconut pandan cake. The palm leaves give this cake a green color. This Imperial Pastry Porter is not green, but the fatty and sweet notes from the dessert do stand out. Like the vanilla and nuts. Forget that dessert, this alternative is better.

Ingredients: BARLEY malt, maltodextrin, lactose, Toasted Coconut chips, Pandan paste, candy sugar, hops, yeast, water -K"

Indonesian Pandan cake

That's a pastry porter, so one expects to taste....... yes, pastry !
Well folks, that's exactly how it tastes and smells.
Coconut, vanilla, pandan, and roasted malts are the keys.
This beer is deep black. You really can't go more black than this......amazing.
Pouring gives that black oily texture.
When carefully looking at the liquid, some green colors are noticed.
The creamy foam is actually green colored too, due to the use of pandan paste ofcourse.
It's not a cheap beer though. I paid €5.20, but it really justifies the quality  t_u
Be prepared that this beer is very sweet, and has no bitter roast malts flavors.
It drinks so smooth, that you easily would forget that you drink an 11 vol% monster! That's dangerous drinkable for sure.

We are in Holland, so we ordered that typical local mixed platter, called "bittergarnituur" (nothing bitter to be precise)

Anyway, great beers, great food, great weather. What more do you want?

Cheers,
Filip

That's certainly not a beer flavor you see every day!  :stir:  Sounds and looks rather interesting. Worth a try, but probably not something that I'd want to have often. That bittergarnituur appears like it would go quite well with your beer choice. Thanks for sharing this unique tasting experience Filip.

Cheers! - John

You nailed it John!
Definitely worth a try, but drinking every week sure wouldn't be my habit either.
That's why it is such a great idea to make such a brews limited one-time editions. A wise decision.
Anyway, it was tasty, but Katrien's Westmalle tripel sure is from a different level that begs to be ordered again...... and again  t_u
Cheers,
Filip

Hi Filip,

I had noted that Katrien had wisely chosen a Westmalle Triple!

But you are of course right, sometimes you've just got to try something
different!

Cheers!
