Hi,
It's always nice to pay the Netherlands a visit for local shopping at Sluis, very near to Bruges.
Sluis has that Jumbo supermarket that is open on Sundays. https://www.jumbo.com/winkel/sluis/jumbo-sluis-sint-annastraat
You can find Dutch specialities that are not so easy to find over here. Mainly oversea former Dutch colonisation food like spicy saté sauces, Sambal Oelek, Sambal Brandal, Sambal Badjak and Manis, Ketjap Manis sauce, ingredients for Nasi Goreng and Bami Goreng, Atjar Tjampoer (pickled vegetables), but also many local Dutch specialties like "Gelderse rookworst", the typical Duch smoked sausage from Gelderland, and so much more...
Dutch speciality beers are not that common, but still there was that nice promotion of buying two 6-packs of Hertog Jan Grand Prestige and get the second 6-pack at 50% discount.
See https://view.publitas.com/jumbo-supermarkten/jumbo-extra-goedkoop-week-jjfu-10/page/26-27
or https://www.jumbo.com/producten/hertog-jan-grand-prestige-bier-flessen-6-x-300ml-431033DS
That's 12.75 Euro's for 12 bottles of tasty 10 vol% beer.  t_u

This dark beer is brewed at Arcense Bierbrouwerij (AB-InBev) - https://www.hertogjan.nl/
Industrial beer for sure, but it is a great flavored beer.
A barley wine at 10 vol%.
Sweet (candy sugar and maltiness), but not too much. Just that perfect balance.
This beer has a nice rich foam too.
Drinks very smooth and dense. Satisfying mouth feeling, and a remarkable roast bitterness (!).
This is the 2023 edition, so it has that fresh flavors too.
This is most probably one of the Netherlands best beers, produced on that large scale. A beauty !!!

Cheers,
Filip, who is ready to cook some Indonesian food ASAP :)
Selamat Makan.

Hi Filip,

I've only tried this brew once, back in 2008, and according to my notes it was considered as a Triple then.

I've also tasted 2 other Jan Hertog brews, around the same time, as they were
bought together, and I can't say that I was very impressed with any of them
frankly; I was very disappointed in fact. Holland does have some outstanding
breweries though.

Cheers!

Viv,
This Grand Prestige is the only beer I like from the Hertog Jan range.
It pops out as being their "prestige" beer like the name is saying too. well deserved...
It is true that the other ones aren't really that great though. I never buy them, and that's already a sign.
Cheers,
Filip

Hi everyone,

Talking of the Netherlands just 2 days ago Linda booked our next family break, we're going to Amsterdam in November 🇳🇱

We've visited before as a family back in 2016 so a return trip is just perfect, we're staying in roughly the same area as we did back then (near the Anne Frank house) so are ideally situated for exploring all this beautiful city had to offer.

Cheers

Great idea Jay!
Beerwulf has an interesting page about the Amsterdam beer craft scene: https://www.beerwulf.com/en-nl/articles-about-craft-beer/top-10-craft-beer-hotspots-in-amsterdam
In De Wildeman isn't listed, but really should be  t_u

I'm sure that Proeflokaal Arendsnest is the overal best place to savour local Dutch quality beers.
In 4 weeks time, we will head to Germany again. The region of Ahr valley to be precise. Our 2nd. visit.
There were massive flooding two years ago in that beautiful valley, so we hope things have been restored to the better.
Cheers,
Filip

We're sure to have a fantastic family break, it's a long overdue return to Amsterdam.

There's so many places we didn't visit on our first trip but with us staying for 5 days we're sure to cram in brewery t'IJ and Oedipus and also places like the Mikkeller bar at Morebeer and Gollem

You both have a great time in Germany...great beer, great food, great wine...heaven.

Cheers
