Last week, we were kindly invited by brewmaster Piet Salomez to taste his new creation.
The new beer has the name Cuvée Nelson, and refers to the use of New Zealand hops Nelson Sauvin.
The hop name Nelson Sauvin tells the plant’s story:
Nelson refers to a region in central New Zealand, while Sauvin is
shorthand for the grape variety Sauvignon Blanc.
Much like that wine,
the Nelson Sauvin hop presents a fruity, tropical profile, with detours
to lychee and mango.
The hops also do have that typical citric flavours, reminiscent of American citric West Coast hops.
Note that the beer is brewed by Piet Salomez himself at brewery De Graal.
The tasting was done inside this beautiful castle of Wallemote, located near Izegem.
As you can see, castle Wallemote is part of the label.
Brewmaster Piet Salomez bringing the beauties......
A blond and hazy beer is the outcome.
Tasting immediatly gave those citric, flowery hop sensations.
Not that much rest sugars left, which gives the beer a dryish flavour profile.
A blond beer which even has that winy Sauvignon Blanc characteristics.
This beer is 6 vol% strong, and has that really refreshing flavours. A perfect beer for summertime period.
Only Nelson Sauvin hops are used here, hence this beer being single hopped.
An additional dry-hopping gives a wonderful hoppy aroma when nosing.
This is a true Belgian IPA, and again a great addition to the already big family of Belgian IPA style.
Well, what more can I say than to recommend this beer with full heart and soul.
Definitely one of the better Belgian IPA's around.
The beer has become such a hoppy delight, and the brewing equipment from brewmaster Wim Saeyens from De Graal has done a major job to produce some damn fine hoppy qualities.
Nevertlesse, the hops are not that overwhelming nor dominant, and even some balance has been achieved here.
What follows are pictures from other Alternatief beers, available that afternoon.
All have those great artisanal top quialities.
The tasting glass shows Alternatief.
Here's another beer from 't Alternatief : Tatsevoet.
Tatsevoet is an original amber colored full-malt beer at 6 vol% of alcohol.
The name Tatsevoet, Tetsevoet, or Taatsvoet has it's historic origins a century ago.
It comes from the old shoemakers language.
An iron or stone foot on which the shoe was attached to be nailed (Flemish saying tatsen (=nailing)) onto the sole.
A beer that has been developed to reconstruct that historical beer style called Spéciale Belge from the years 20 - 30.
That period was the flourishing time for that beer style.
Brouwerij Het Alternatief, which has its "roots" in Izegem, has made this beer specially for the city of Izegem.
It has also achieved the label Authentic Regional Product, and is served at official happenings inside the town hall.
Due to the use of alot of caramel malts, the beer has a pronounced caramel malty flavour.
With a 25 EBU bitterness, it is significant more bitter than the regular commercial versions.
To reach the original beer, no artificial ingredients are used. Only the use of malts here. similar like it was done a 100 years ago,
English yeast, English hop varieties from the Poperinge region. Unfiltered and bottle refermented.
Top notch !
Going for bitter beer, is going for their Bittere Waarheid (Bitter Truth).
A blond hop bitter beast at 10 vol%! The bitterness is about 70 EBU, but yet still so drinkable.
4 Kinds of hops were used at 4 different stages.
From this beer a beautiful statue was made by artist Johan Herman (www.johanherman.be)
The statue can be seen on the label.
All togerther a most delicious beer, and to be called a perfect Triple IPA!
Ambetanterik is a stout at 10 vol% of alcohol.
This accessible stout has the flavours of dark chocolate, coffee, and chicory bitterness.
You can easily taste the burnt malts that are dosed very carefully.
A very complex beer with different aspects of burnt malts.
Unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.
Also, from this beer, a statue was made by artist Johan Herman, Again, the statue ornaments the label here.
Color 144 EBC. - Bitterness 43 EBU - Style: heavy stout.
One of the best brews from 't Alternatief is undoubtedly this "Eerwaarde Pater".
See also: New: Eerwaarde Pater - 9.0 vol% - Brew Firm Het Alternatief
A heavy complex beer, with warming alcoholic sensations, optimal in winter time periods.
A dark brown beer with flavors and aromas of wood, wine, port wine, and slightly burnt malts.
7 Kinds of different malts are used here, from pilsener towards chocolate malts, and 2 yeast varieties do the fermentation job.
Colorr 90 EBC - Bitteness 40 EBU - Alcohol 9 % vol.
Well, if that wasn't some treat at castle Wallemote.
It's clear that Brew Firm 't Alternatief brews such a tasty quality beers with such a wide variety.
